Denmark Pounce Sad Slovenians
Denmark handed Slovenia a resonant 33-24 defeat in the first of two training matches Saturday night in Kolding.
Lefty Olga Ceckova on the right wing position was the highlight of the Slovenian side. Naturalized Derepasko, the Krim star, looked completely out of shape and verged on the embarrassing with her error-ridden play, effectively outlining that the Champions League season is still months away.
With the domestic League well under way, the Danish players looked in crisp form and put in a good team effort. Kiaerskou, the Euro 2002 absentee, racked up 8 goals and was the danger woman in attack.
Denmark also emerged victorious in the second meeting, winning 24-18 (11-11) after a much less glamorous showing. Henritte Mikkelsen, the Viborg wing, gained top scoring status with 5 goals.

The losing sides of Michalovce and Madeira both have a shot in the EHF where they enter qualification round 2.

Viborg Blow Up
Viborg HK wasted a 3-goal surplus in the end phase of the League encounter with Horsens HK and ended up losing 27-28 (12-15) at home in Viborg-hallen.
The decimated Viborg side - Fruelund, Lejeune, and Burgers were watching from the sidelines - regained control after being down 12-17 at the beginning of the second half. With Lotte Kiaerskou leading the way, Viborg HK pulled ahead 25-22 as the conclusion neared.
But Horsens marked out Kiaerskou and frustrated the Viborg attack enough to grab the sensational win in the last minute.
The 7 goals of the impeccable Åsa Eriksson were accompanied by 6 conversions Jane Wangsoe. Kiaerskou and Assink each hit 7 for Viborg, while Mikkelsen ran up 5.
Randers HK regained some respectability after the painful defeat to GOG last week. They up-ended Fox Team Nord 26-18. Steluta Luca and Chao Zhai both scored 7 times for Randers.

Slagelse Slam Copenhagen
A second half extravaganza from Slagelse FH resulted in a 33-24 conquest of hapless FCK Handball.
Down only 14-16 at the interval, the Copenhagen side kept themselves in contention for surprisingly long. But when 7-goal artist Ausra Fridrikas turned on the heat, FCK ran out of steam.
She was joined by 6 goals from Petrovic and 5 from Tarculovska. Camilla Andersen settled for just 3 successful shots and will have her work cut out if she is to win top scoring accolades in the League yet again.
Christina Krogshede wrapped up 5 goals for FCK, while Mette Vestergaard put in 4. Eszter Siti, FCK's star playmaker, converted on just two tries and has yet to impress for her new club.

GOG Wings Rock Randers, KIF Kolding March On
The supposedly crisis-struck GOG-Gudme team earned the first victory of the season by upsetting Randers HK 32-27 (17-13). Effective fast breaks from wings Ragnhild Aamodt (8 goals) and Monique Feijen (7) paved the way for the unexpected triumph in Randers.
World handballer Chao Zhai hit no fewer than 14 goals, 8 of which from the penalty line, but to little avail as the remaining parts of the Randers offensive was struggling. Especially with Mette Iversen in the GOG goal.
Pivot Tatiana Silitch (6) and right back Steluta Luca (3) came away with respectable performances for Randers. But Tanja Milanovic (2) never made a mark and spent most of the match one the bench, while national player Katrine Munch (1) on the right wing was plain bad.
For GOG, Ditte Andersen contributed with 8 goals (3 pens.) and Rikke Hoerlykke put in 5. The win is highly welcome after GOG drew with Soenderjyske and lost to Kolding at home in the first two matches of the season.
KIF Kolding fetched the third win of the season in as many matches after staging a second half comeback against SK Aarhus that resulted in a 24-21 (10-14) victory. In yet another impressive display Louise Pedersen scored 9 goals (3 pens.) for the home team.
She was accompanied by 5 goals from Myaro and 3 from Roslyng. SK Aarhus relied on the heavy-handed Maja Groenbaek (6) to hit the majority of their goals, but could also count on Rokne (4) and Moreau (4).

Vigdis Won - in Court

Haarsaker has been criticized by national coach Marit Breivik and the legendary Byaasen veteran Trine Haltvik for her actions.

Aalborg Humbled by Slagelse
Slagelse FH crushed Aalborg DH 39-25 (19-11) in front of a record-breaking crowd of 4,500 in the Gigantium arena in Aalborg late Wednesday evening. The massive support for the home team did not bother the star-studded Slagelse side which was aided by 12 goals from an unstoppable Bojana Petrovic.
Ausra Fridrikas broke through the Aalborg defense at will and scored 8 goals, while team captain Camilla Andersen settled for 6.
Aalborg quickly went behind 0-3, yet fought back to keep up with Slagelse for the first 15 minutes, after which the Danish champions increased their lead through a number of counter attacks and never looked back.
The ex-Viborg duo of Natalia Deriouguina and Heidi Astrup scored 7 goals each, while a flu-struck Agnes Farkas had trouble finding her range and registered 4 goals for Aalborg DH in the club's first home match in the League.

Experimenting Randers Fall in Aarhus
Randers HK had a disappointing debut to the season when they lost 24-27 (13-14) away to SK Aarhus. EHF Master Coach Morten Arvidsson made several tactical experiments. Among other things he chose to exchange the keeper for a seventh field player on several occasions.
At times, it paid off as Randers built up a 21-17 lead with 15 minutes to go before SK Aarhus staged a comeback.
Line player Karina Bjorn and right wing Stephanie Moreau scored 8 and 6 goals respectively as Aarhus' leading scorers. Milanovic was the most successful shot artist for Randers with her 5 goals. Chao Zhai had to settle for 4 goals.

Ikast Survive Soenderjyske Scare
Ikast/Bording almost suffered a shocking points loss at home to unheralded Soenderjyske HK in the second League match of the season. Ikast escaped with a narrow 22-21 (15-12) win after Soenderjyske hit the post at 21-all one minute from time.
Kristine Andersen, 8 goals on the night, scored the decider. Narcisa Paunica also registered 8 goals for Ikast. Susan Andersen hit 6 goals for Soenderjyske.
Ikast/Bording dropped a point in the first match against Aalborg, and now Christian Dalmose has even more to worry about. Just 7 goals in the second half is appalling against such opposition. Newcomer Gro Hammerseng and left wing Line Daugaard both joined the side after recovering from injuries.

Radulovics Back in Action
Bojana Radulovics, arguably the best left-handed player in the world, is back in the Dunaferr side after one year's absence. This weekend she scored 10 goals when Cornexi Alcoa were thrashed 35-24 (17-12) in Dunaujvaros in the first round of the NB I - the Hungarian league.
Main rivals Herz Budapest also got off to a smashing start when they thwarted Vasas 38-17 (18-7) away from home.

Soenderjyske Shock GOG
Promoted Soenderjyske HK held GOG-Gudme to a surprising 24-24 (11-14) draw in the team's first ever League match at home in Aabenraa. Virtually every pundit has expected Soenderjyske to finish dead last in the League, and some even went as far as to say that they wouldn't gain a single point.
Soenderjyske HK's captain Susan Andersen is happy to have shut some of the naysayers up. But GOG-Gudme will have little to celebrate. It already seems evident that a play-off spot is unrealistic for the bronze winners from last season.

Andersen Shines as Slagelse Dizzle Horsens
Camilla Andersen was in an inspired mood when Slagelse opened the season with a 34-20 (14-10) dismissal of Horsens HK at home in Antvorskovhallen. Last year's League top scorer hit 9 goals as she steered her team to a routine victory.
Valentina Tarculovska enjoyed a fine debut as she consistently challenged the Horsens defense and scored 6 goals from her left wing. Bojana Petrovic had a slow start, but came into form in the second half and hit a total of 7 goals.
Veteran Ausra Fridrikas with 6 goals also wreaked havoc on the Horsens defense with her typical one-woman insurgencies. Anja Freser, who apparently has been licensed in the last minute, had a quiet begin to her stay in Slagelse, only managing 1 goal - albeit on just two tries and with plenty of time on the bench.
Stephanie Cano, likewise a new lefty to reinforce Slagelse's right attacking side, also had to settle for 1 goal, but played a fairly solid match.
Horsens HK made a good start in the first half and kept pace with Slagelse for a while, but they made far too many mistakes in the fast-breaks to capitalize on their strong defensive work. Once again, Swedish veteran Åsa Eriksson was the main attraction with her 6 goals, but Heidi Soendergaard on the right wing produced 5 goals to cap off a good performance.
Camilla Andersen was in an inspired mood when Slagelse opened the season with a 34-20 (14-10) dismissal of Horsens HK at home in Antvorskovhallen. Last year's League top scorer hit 9 goals as she steered her team to a routine victory.

Kolding Outflank FCK in Season Opener
In a match marred by technical errors, KIF Kolding kicked off the League season by beating FCK Handball 24-21 (10-8) in their home arena.
Managing 7 goals, right wing Louise Pedersen was one of the few highlights. In the deciding moments, she was joined by Christina Roslyng on the left wing and the promising Anette Bonde who both scored some crucial goals to win the match.
Not scoring a single goal until the 11th minute, FCK Handball struggled greatly in the first half. Neither right back Mette Vestergaard nor playmaker Eszter Siti had much quality on offer, and the Copenhagen attack was mostly a mess.
But through the ineptitude of Kolding, FCK fought their way back and even went ahead 16-15 after 45 minutes before Kolding closed them out. Matilda Boson, the newly-signed Swedish left wing, was one of the better players in the FCK team.
Eszter Siti scored 7 goals, but 5 of them came on 7m throws. Mette Vestergaard hit 4 goals on a dozen shots for FCK. Christina Roslyng registered 4 goals for Kolding, while Myaro, Bonde, and Olesen reached 3 á piece.

Aalborg Draw Ikast
Aalborg DH squandered a 4-goal lead and had to contend with a 25-25 draw away against Ikast/Bording in the late-evening televised match. Paunica scored the equalizer in the last minute for the home team in this thrilling encounter.
Piling up 6 and 5 goals respectively, Farkas and Deriouguina were the main offensive weapons of Aalborg DH, but Rikke Nielsen also showed why she is one of the few players from last season's team who can still count on a place in the first line-up. Heidi Astrup delivered a sub-par performance, much akin to her poor spring form in Viborg.
Beatrix Benyats, 4 goals, and Louise Mortensen, 2 goals, proved a useful duo in Aalborg's right attacking side.
Keeper Natalia Petrakova had some difficulties with Kristine Andersen in the second half, but in general made a much better account of herself than a meek Karin Mortensen in the Ikast goal.
Mortensen was duly replaced by new signing Ana Vojcic in the second half, and the Serbian was a stronger resistance for the offense of the guests, stopping a 7m throw from Agnes Farkas along the way.
The Ikast attack mostly relied on solo efforts from Kristine Andersen, who scored 7 goals, and Narcisa Paunica with 6 goals. Despite 4 goals, it is evident that Sanja Jovovic is a novelty in the side.
Neither team made much use of their wings. Uncharacteristically, Ikast's Touray and Aalborg's Hundvin only scored 3 goals combined.
A successful premiere for Aalborg ahead of their first home match of the season against Slagelse next week, and perhaps a bad omen for Ikast. But with Hammerseng and Daugaard soon returning they shouldn't be too worried. And it may turn out that a draw against Aalborg isn't such a bad result after all.

French Joy for Viborg
With a vigilant Leila Lejeune in attack and a stellar Valerie Nicolas in goal, Viborg HK discarded SK Aarhus 23-16 (11-8) in the opening match of the Danish League.
Lejeune hit 7 goals for Viborg, while Nicolas proved to be a frustrating hurdle for the Aarhus attack, although Maja Gronbek with her 9 (2) goals was an exception.
Aarhus' star signing Marianne Rokne, the ex-Tertnes player, had to settle for 3 goals. Wing prodigy Henriette Mikkelsen, who switched to Viborg from Ikast, scored 5 times for the home team, while line player Olga Assink racked up 4.

Nemeth, Siti Ready to Play
Viborg HK reached a compromise with Cornexi Alcoa just in time to allow Helga Nemeth to play in the first match of the season. Viborg paid the Hungarians 20,000.
Meanwhile, FCK Handball made a deposit of 32,000 to the Hungarian Handball Federation to get Eszter Siti licensed for the debut league match against KIF Kolding this weekend. Both FCK and Ferencvaros have agreed to respect the decision of the EHF which will decide how the money will be distributed. Obviously, FCK hope to have the deposit partly or fully returned.

Slagelse Booming
Slagelse recently announced a surplus of around $45,000 for the last season, and at the same time presented a new major sponsor, sparTrelleborg. In addition, most of the tickets for the coming League season have already been sold out.
Slagelse have also been chosen by the EHF to host the Super Cup, officially named the European Championship for Club Teams, in the beginning of November in Farum Arena. The participants are: Krim Ljubljana (Champions League winners), Slagelse FH (EHF Cup winners), E.S.B.F. Besancon (Cup Winners' Cup winner), and Ikast/Bording (wild card).

Slagelse Pays Up for Valentina
After the mediation of the European Handball Federation, Slagelse have settled to paid Hypo a sum of approximately 13,000 to Valentina Tarculovska to clear her license. A similar problem with Stephanie Cano has also been solved. But Anja Freser is still in limbo as Slagelse haven't reached an agreement with Krim Ljubljana.

Nemeth Will Miss Out on Premiere
Viborg HK will be without Helga Nemeth for the premiere match of the season in the Danish League on Wednesday against SK Aarhus. Cornexi Alcoa demand 30,000 to release her certificate, but Viborg refuse to pay that amount because the Hungarian veteran has only been signed on a one-year contract.
The EHF is treating the case, but at a rather slow rate. Viborg HK will now try and reach a compromise directly with Cornexi Alcoa.

Byasen Spring a Surprise
Norwegian club handball keeps showing impressing signs in the preparation tournaments. Byasen IL won their own 4-club tournament ahead of Leipzig and Herz Budapest.
They lost the match against Leipzig 23-24, but defeated Selbu 19-18 and Herz 27-21 to finish on 4 points with a better goal difference than Leipzig. The Germans had lost 30-35 to Herz Budapest.
[A note on grammar. From now on, starting with this entry, I will be treating all club names (when referring to the team in general) as plural, which I feel is better in accordance with the standard in the English-language sports press, hence 'Spring' instead of 'Springs'.]

Krim Wins Sika-Cup
Krim Ljubljana routed Bayer Leverkusen 25-11 (13-4) in the final to grab the Sika Cup, a strong warm-up tournament in the German alps. The strange score line is due to the matches being played in 2x15 minutes.
Bayer Leverkusen had defeated Kometal Skopje in the semifinal, but only after extra time and 7m throws. Krim Ljubljana won their semifinal against Rapid Bucharest 21-19.
Dunaferr and Valencia also participated, but neither team was particularly successful, although Valencia's Marta Mangue hit 32 goals to become tournament top scorer. Amelia Busuioceanu of Bucharest was named best player of the Sika-Cup, while Dinu was heralded as the best keeper.
