Small Site Change
I have removed the 'Top Sites' from the left navigation bar as it was a bit confusing to have the same sites listed at several places. And there's also the problem of having sites listed that are in different languages - English, German, Danish, Hungarian etc. I'm trying to think of a more logical approach to enhance recommended and substantive handball sites.

Hong Shall Not Return
Jeong-Ho Hong has decided to stay in South Korea when she has completed the recovery following shoulder surgery. It was expected that she would return to Slagelse FH later this season, but she has given up on those plans. It is not known whether or not she plans to retire, but that looks to be the most likely option for the veteran Korean.

Blazing Larvik Squashes Viborg
Larvik clinched the TV2 Cup for the second year running after demolishing Viborg HK 35-25 (20-15) in the final on Sunday. Viborg's revamped side kept pace with Larvik for 23 minutes, only trailing 12-13 at that time. But when the Norwegians stepped up a gear, Viborg had no response and Ole G. Gjekstad's team could cruise to victory.
Katja Nyberg and Linn Kristin Riegelhuth scored 7 goals each for Larvik, with Olga Assink filing 7 for Viborg. Especially Nyberg displayed her attacking qualities on the left back position, but Larvik's strong right side with the two young lefties Haarsaker and Riegelhuth was outstanding as well.
Viborg was frankly a disorganized mess. Keeper Valerie Nicolas were put in hopeless positions by an unsteady defense and could do little to avert the Larvik onslaught. Viborg tried a variety of formations in attack, often fielding inexperienced players, but except for the first ten minutes struggled throughout the match to worry the Larvik defense and a vintage Lene Rantala.
Helga Nemeth was one bright exception. She managed 5 fine goals despite being benched for large parts of the match.
Larvik is undefeated in the preparation phase and looks even stronger than last season when they gave a good account of themselves against Krim Ljubljana in Champions League quarterfinal. They are currently without the pregnant Monica Meland on the line, but Lene Lillevik has proved a fine replacement.
Ikast HK managed a lucky 31-30 over Vaag Vipers to take third place after trailing for most of the match. Vipers lost their key player Kristine Lunde to a heel injury in the first half when they had acquired a sizable lead. Sanja Jovovic scored 7 goals for Ikast.

Figueiredo Shines in the Stats
The Brazilian player Millene Figueiredo was the most proficient goal scorer of the Junior World Championship in Macedonia. She hit 75 goals on 104 shots in 8 matches, an efficiency of 72 percent. Mighty impressive when you consider that she also registered 48 assists during the tournament. The 20-year-old Figueiredo is just 167 cms tall.

Emilya Turey, most valuable player of the tournament and in 6th place, scored 52 goals on just 64 shots, an efficiency of over 80 percent. Ferencvaros Rattles Krim
Despite losing several key players over the summer, Herz Budapest showed impressive strength in their own 4-club tournament over the weekend. They beat Ferrobus Mislata 27-26 on the first day in what was dubbed as a farewell match for veteran Ildiko Padar who is retiring.
In the second match, Hypo Niederoesterreich was defeated 28-26, and in the final on Sunday Krim Ljubljana was downed 24-21. Ferencvaros looks to have an easy path into the Champions League this year as they are meeting either the Greek side of Anagenniszi Artasz or the Dutch team Zeeman Vastgoed in October.

Randers with Low-Key German Finish
Randers HK ended the tour of Germany by losing all three matches in a 4-club tournament in Leipzig over the weekend. The team lost to Nuremberg, 27-31, Borussia Dortmund, 30-32 and the host team and eventual tournament winners of HC Leipzig, 26-31. Coach Morten Arvidsson was not too disappointed, though.
In the match against Nuremberg they played without Zhai and Milanovic, and their Belorussian line player Tatiana Silitch was also missing from the line-up during the entire weekend after suffering a hand injury. Arvidsson also pointed to the fact that many of the players were exhausted after cris-crossing through Germany in a bus for more than a week.

Croatia Tops Norway To Steer Clear of Russia
Croatia earned first place in Group I by narrowly defeating Norway 36-35 (15-18) on the last day of the Group stage in the Junior World Championship. The Norwegians saw a 34-33 lead slip by in the decisive minutes which forces them to play the Russian title favorites in the semifinals on Friday.
The Russian collective of predominantly Akva Volgograd players filed a 32-25 (18-12) win over Hungary to finish top of Group II. The Hungarians square off with Croatia in the other semifinal.
Denmark saved some honor by routing Romania 37-28 (17-12) to qualify for a meaningless match for 7th place. Viborg HK's Ann Grete Noergaard, the best Danish player of the tournament, hit 7 goals on the occasion, only bettered by Lene Thomsen's 8 strikes.
Neither Viborg's much-touted Berit Kristensen nor Ikast's lefty Lise Knudsen have impressed to any significant degree during the tournament.

JWC Semifinalists in Place: Norway Denies Sweden
The four semifinalists at the Junior World Championship are already confirmed, and there are no surprises. Norway and Croatia go through from Group I, while Russia and Hungary qualify out of Group II.
Hungary made it through by denying the impressive Korean side 24-22. The match was tied at 21-all, when Juhasz and Bulath closed the proceedings with a goal each.
Russia added another win to their resume by handing Romania, a country with proud traditions at junior level, a 34-29 defeat. Postnova scored 10 goals for the Russians, but Romania's Meirosu was match top scorer with 13 pins.
Sweden posed a strong challenge to Norway, but came up one goal short and lost 31-32 after having trailed 11-16 earlier in the match. Group I was then decided when the favored Croatians defeated the home team of Macedonia 31-27 to go 4 points clear with just one main round match remaining.
Croatia took control in the middle of the first half by scoring 7 unanswered goals. The Macedonians did get 4 back to make it only 17-14 for the Croatians at half time. In the second half, the hosts tied the match at 21-21, but they would never get closer.
Only managing 6 paltry goals in the second half, Denmark fell back to last place in Group II after losing 14-19 to Germany.

Randers Shining on German Soil
Randers HK continues to show promising signs on their 11-day tour of Germany. Last night they defeated the German champions DJK/MJC Trier 31-23. World Handballer Chao Zhai blasted in 9 goals for the Danes and was assisted by 6 goals from newcomer Tanja Milanovic.

Lefty Steluta Luca, the Romanian arrival, has been benched in the two first matches in Germany because of a minor injury.

Hungary Pillages Meek Danes
After suffering a crushing 23-32 (7-15) defeat at the hands of Hungary, the Danish team is out of the running for a semifinal spot at the Junior World Championship in Macedonia.
Russia continued its winning streak in their first of three matches in the main round by wrestling Germany to the ground with a 26-18 win. South Korea almost let a 5 goal lead slip by, but they hung on to defeat Romania 28-27. This victory means that the only non-European team in the main round is still in with a chance for a semifinal.
But it will take a victory against Hungary tomorrow to get them there.

Denmark Gets Through, Serbia Stumbles
The Danish junior team suffered a respectable 25-29 defeat at the hands of Russia in the last match of the preliminary round which was enough to see the girls through to the main round as South Korea had defeated Serbia and Montenegro 27-23 earlier in the day.
Russia progresses to Group II of the main round with 4 points, while Denmark and Korea only have the one point they gained from drawing each other. Serbia and Montenegro will have to settle for the less than awe-inspiring placement round.
Hungary churned out a last-ditch win over Romania to give them 4 points in the same main round group, opening the road to the semifinals for them. Germany denied Poland in the last round, winning 20-19 to squeeze through as well. But like Romania they will also just bring one point to Group II.
Group I is slightly more open. Croatia denied Sweden 33-31 to secure the maxuimum 4 points for the main round, while the Swedes bring 2 points. By virtue of a narrow 33-32 win over China, Macedonia also joins Group I with 2 points.
Norway scored another big win in their last match, downing the Czech Republic a smashing 37-23, and they currently look to be strongest challengers to Russia. With zero points each, Portugal and the Czechs are virtually out of the running for a semifinal birth. This tournament format, also in place at Euro 2002, is deeply flawed when teams are this badly handicapped in the main round.
By the looks of things, Russia-Croatia and Norway- Hungary are the most likely semifinal matches, with Russia and Norway favored to meet in the final.

Superior Russia Rampages Brazil
Russia walked past Brazil at the Junior World Championship, winning an astounding 49-20 (25-12) over a team that had proved a capable opponent in the other matches in Group C. After a disappointing draw with South Korea yesterday, Denmark is in danger of being knocked out after the preliminary round.
The team is not likely to score any points against Russia tomorrow, but rather a sound beating against the overwhelming tournament favorites who charged ahead with 14 goals from the powerful Emiliya Turey in today's encounter.
In the weak Group A, Croatia and Sweden are already through, while Portugal and Japan will have to battle it out for the last spot. In Group B, Norway with maximum points has booked its place in the main round. Macedonia and the Czech Republic look to follow suit, but China still has a shot. Hungary and Romania are certain of advancement in Group D. But the Germans still have to deny the Poles access to go through themselves.
The Junior World Championship was hit by tragedy yesterday when the Russian referee Sergey Medvedev (36 yo) suffered a cardiac arrest durring a running session and died. Medveded had been an EHF referee since 1996.

Prokop Furious With Logvin
Tanja Logvin's Krim transfer seems to have come unexpected to just about everyone except Gunnar Prokop. Hypo star Logvin already hooked up with the Slovenians in May, but Prokop is still shocked and deeply disappointed with his now former Austrian ace.
It turns out that Logvin had verbally promised to stay with the club and even took part in the pre-season training camp. But suddenly she was gone from the camp, having fled to Slovenia with her male companion.

Russia Humbles Serbia
Russia stamped their authority on the Junior World Championship in Macedonia by demolishing Serbia and Montenegro 35-16 in their first match of the tournament. The Serbians had defeated Denmark yesterday.
Emilya Turey, who is already experienced at senior national level, hit 6 goals on 6 attemps for the reigning World and European junior champions who now must be considered even more overwhelming favorites for the title. The 1.98m girl Elena Polenova didn't particularly impress, scoring just 2 goals on her 6 shots. Anna Kochetova, just 16 years of age, scored on all of her 3 tries.
The Serbian backline had a dreadful day. Yesterday's top scorer Obradovic scored just once on her 12 attempts. Jelena Popovic was almost as bad, converting only 2 of her 15 shots. To complete the misery, playmaker Zivadinovic hit 3 from 11. Of course, these stats are also to the credit of the Russian defense.

Ikast To Clash With Podravka
Ikast/Bording has to overcome a difficult hurdle before getting access to the Champions League. The qualification draw today matched them with the winner of the 1st round clash between Swiss side LC Brühl and the strong Croatian champions of Podravka Vegeta.
Ikast coach Christian Dalmost is certain that the Croatian 1996 European Club Champions will prevail from that meeting to set up a strong challenge for his team.
"It will be a difficult match. We have drawn one of the three best teams in qualification, but we will have a chance. It's more difficult getting into the tournament than actually playing it," Dalmose is quoted as saying to Danish tabloid B.T.
Hypo Niederoesterreich will go head-to-head with Norwegian runner-ups Nordstrand 2000, while E.S.B.F. Besancon has a date with Motor Zaporozhye.

Serbia Downs Denmark
16 of the 20 participating teams at the Junior World Championsip were in action on the opening day in Macedonia. Serbia & Montenegro won the anticipated encounter with Denmark in Group C 28-24 (9-9). The Serbians, aided by 8 goals from top scorer Obradovic, overcame a two-goal deficit in the second half and stormed to a 23-19 lead. 7 goal on 11 tries from Ikast prodigy Lise Knudsen couldn't prevent the Serbian success.
In Group D, another interesting match-up saw Romania outscoring Poland 27-19 (12-9), while Germany racked up a 33-13 routine win over last-minute entry Algeria. Sweden had to settle for a surprising 24-24 (12-10) draw against the Japanese underdogs in Group A.
Host nation Macedonia registered a surprisingly close 27-24 conquest over Congo in Group D which also saw the Czech Republic coming away from the first round with a 30-26 victory over the young representatives from China.

Handball Site Reviews: Kometal Fans
Kometal Gjorche Petrov Fan Page, kometalfans.cjb.net
Handnews Rating: ***½ (of ****)
The name Kometal Skopje should resonate well with the majority of handball fans. Or rather, Kometal Gjorche Petrov should resonate well as that is the actual name of the club, although many prefer Kometal Skopje for sakes of convenience.
Not only are the permanent Macedonian champions one of the strongest clubs in Europe, their Champions League victory last year being the latest example, they are also one of the most vociferously backed. Visitors to their fortress of a home arena, the noisy "Kale", can surely testify to that.
But their supporters have also made a mark on the internet by churning out one of the best fan sites around. For international visitors the main selling point is the precious fact that it contains an English version. Unfortunately, this is a rare feature of handball sites on the web. Which makes the effort of the Kometal fans involved all the more commendable.
And it certainly makes the stay a lot more pleasant for those of us that neither speak Macedonian, nor similar languages like Serbo-Croatian and Bulgarian.
The most rewarding aspect of the site is a riveting and detailed account of the stunning 2001/2002 season which propelled Kometal to the pinnacle of European handball. The sweet triumphs and the agonizing setbacks, mostly the former of course, which took the club to its first ever Champions League crown - all chronicled from the passionate perspective of a fan. It may not be completely unbiased handball literature, but it's exciting and takes the reader close to the action.
Also noteworthy is a well-written description of the fans who flock to that jampacked inferno of noise called "Kale" to support their team, and an explanation why this arena is so special to them. It has been said that fans of women's handball lack the sparkle and passion that accompanies other European team sports, like football, basketball, or ice hockey.
While there may be some general truth to this statement, it's certainly not valid in a city called Skopje. Speaking of which, the site also contains a detailed description of the Macedonian capital as well as the country generally, its history and people. Did you know that Mother Teresa, although of Albanian heritage, was actually born in Skopje?
Back to the club name. Quite a few people may have thought, myself included, that Gjorche Petrov was some type of sponsor name, similar to Kometal. But that's as far from the truth as it possible gets. Gjorche Petrov is actually the name of a central figure of the national liberation movement, a Macedonian revolutionary of the late 19th and early 20th century. You learn something new each day.
The site also feature the more traditional and expected segments for a club site. A history of the club, a presentation of the players and management, regular news updates, and a gallery with video captured images of recent matches. More unusal are two MP3 files with two of the favorite songs of the fans. I could swear that I have heard one of them in the Eurovision Song Contest.
There are very few English-language handball forums. In fact, I can only think of one - and, incidentally, it's part of the Kometal site. If you have a urgent need to debate women's handball, you now know where to look.
The color scheme of the web pages is a mixture of yellow and green, fittingly matching the kit of the team. The site is hardly going to win any design prizes, but the navigation is straighforward. 'Kometal Fans' is definitely worth a bookmark - especially since the update rate is good, unlike a few other sites I could mention.

Russian Favorites With 1.98m Player
The preliminary Russian squad for the Junior World Championship includes a sizable contingent of Akva Volgograd players, 10 to be exact. In contrast, only two Lada Toljatti players make up the brutto team of 20 players.
One Akva player that is certain to be of interest to observers of the Championship in Macedonia is Elena Polenova who is listed on the official site as being 1.98m tall and 92kg heavy.
The defending European and World Junior Champions also have a player who is only 16 years old in their squad. Will be interesting to see who actually shows up.

Deadlock Broken in Haarsaker Transfer
By virtue of a bureacratic blunder, Byaasen appears to have lose the transfer battle with Larvik HK over the talented Vigdis Haarsaker. Byaasen broke a deadline to return the transfer papirs to Larvik. As a result, the rules of the Norwegian Handball Federation stipulate that she is relieved from her contract.
Byaasen demanded 400.000 Norwegian kroner for the young shooting star, but Larvik would only cough up with 100.000 as compensation. The only option now left for Byaasen is to demand renewed consideration of the case by the Federation.

Aalborg Tries Podravka Keeper
Oksana Plasnickaya may have been surpassed in the bid to secure a contract with Aalborg DH. Podravka keeper Natallia Petrakova, who is the first choice on the national team of Belarus, is now on trial with the ambitious club.
Petrakova is a 26-year-old who has previously spent four years playing for Norwegian clubs before moving to Croatia last summer to play for Podravka. She has represented Belarus in roughly 80 matches.
